If InqScribe crashes immediately upon launch, there could be several things happening. We’ll try to walk you through some steps to narrow down the cause.

1. Is this a bug that you can trigger consistently, or was it a one-time thing?

If the crash happens consistently, and you can describe the conditions that make it happen (i.e., other software that’s running, USB peripherals that are plugged in, etc.) then please send a support request describing the conditions in detail— enough detail to allow us to replicate the conditions on our end. The more detail you can send us, the better (and quicker) we can help you.

If the crash only happens sometimes, and not on a consistent basis, then please follow the steps below to help narrow down the cause.

2. Can you try restarting your computer and then launching InqScribe with no other software running? Does that address the issue?

3. If you’re using USB peripherals (other than mouse and keyboard), can you try unplugging those, restarting, then launching InqScribe? Does that address the issue?

In both the above cases, the goal is to see if any software or peripherals are conflicting with InqScribe. If InqScribe runs fine alone, then we can reintroduce the others one at a time to find the conflict.

4. Try resetting shortcuts
Here's how to restore your shortcuts to the default settings:
  1. In InqScribe's "Edit" menu, select "Edit Shortcuts..."
  2. We're about to delete your custom Shortcuts and Snippets, so please make a note of any shortcuts you want to add back later. Use the Shortcuts/Snippets menu at the top of this window to switch between your lists of Shortcuts and Snippets.
  3. At the bottom of the window, click "Reset to Defaults."
5. Try resetting your preferences
Here's how to reset your preferences:
  1. Locate your InqScribe Preferences file.

On Windows machines, your preferences file is most likely located here:
    C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\InqScribe\
Note that if you don’t see the folder, you’ll need to show hidden files: Go to the Control Panel > Folder options > View > Show hidden files.

On macOS, your preferences file is located in this folder:

    ~/Library/Preferences/InqScribe/

If you don't see the "Library" folder, go to the Finder, hold down the Option key, and select the "Go" menu.  You should see "Library" listed as one of the option

  2. Next, delete the preferences file. Note that this will erase any snippets and shortcuts you have saved in InqScribe. If you don't want to lose your shortcuts and snippets, what you can do is rename your existing preferences file. InqScribe will only read files called "InqScribe Preferences", so renaming the copy something like "Preferences Backup" would work.

When InqScribe senses that the original preferences file is gone, it will automatically create a brand new preferences file when you launch the program. This should reset any issues that might have been caused by your previous preferences file.

6. If you have tried the above steps and InqScribe is still crashing on launch, please email us a screenshot of your computer just before and just after the crash. We often can notice details on your screen that can help us diagnose the cause. Here is how to send us a screen shot:

  • In Windows, press “print screen”
  • On Mac, press “Apple-Shift-3”
  • Send us the resulting file(s).
